In recent conversations about jobs I’ve had with recruiters and hiring managers, I’ve been asked to consider whether I wanted to be a manager or an individual contributor.
This has not been an easy question to answer.
For one I like working with other people. I believe great work comes from the collision of ideas and discussion. I also enjoy mentoring and developing talent. Not to mention I’m good at leading a team across a finish line.
In the end though, I know I am a creative resource. I love looking at the problem and solving the puzzle. I could never imagine doing my job without having a connection to the consumer. My greatest satisfaction comes from creating products that make people happy. The more people the better.
It seems like the market has shifted in a way that there isn’t the possibility for one person to do all these things. So if I have to choose, I guess I will be a contributor but hopefully, I can continue to do both in some capacity.
